I was the passenger in this airplane when it crashed on 9/4/1976. As we were rotating on takeoff. The engine started loosing power. We made it about 1/3 of a mile from the Lake Elmo Airport and went down in a corn field. We stalled about 20 feet above the corn and struck the ground at a 45 degree nose down and wings level. The impact shoved the motor into the firewall fuel tank causing it to rupture and catch on fire. We climbed out of the aircraft and ran away. About 10 seconds later. The fuel tank exploded destroying the cockpit of the aircraft. I credit the pilot for maintaining control all the way to the ground which saved our lives.
